Reuters has a report on new wave of companies founded to extract licensing fees from existing patents in the wake of recent legal cases, such as the $900 million Sun-Microsoft patent licensing settlement.

The article highlights the company Intellectual Ventures, founded by the former Microsoft executives, as a key player which has raised between $250 million and $400 million to build up a war chest of patents. According to one lawyer quoted in the article "people know what they're doing and they are afraid". Original story from Reuters.com.
