The Commercial Policies Steering Group of the ISO has recommended that a license fee should be charged for commercial use of the ISO standards for country, language and currency codes (ISO 3166, 4217, 639).

The W3C, the UNICODE Consortium and the International Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) have all criticised the proposal.
