PNG format now an ISO standard

The second edition of the patent-free PNG graphics format has been published as a recommendation by the World Wide Web Consortium REC-PNG-20031110, and has become an International Standard, ISO/IEC 15948:2003.

Does MS Internet Explorer render adequately alpha channels of PNGs? Are you using GIFs now that LZW patent expired? What about the ratio quality/filesize in PNG and JPEG? For when a XCF-enabled internet browser? ;-)
