GPL violoations and Sigma Delta

An anonymous poster submited the news that the XVID team has ceased development of the XVID video codec for the time being because they say that Sigma Designs' REALmagic MPEG-4 Video Codec software includes their code and has claimed it as Sigma Designs' own work.

Unfortunately, GPL violations seems to be getting more common each day. Can anything be done to prevent this abuse and has anyone had first-hand experiences with cases such as this? For a related read, see the FSF page on what to do if you see a GPL violation.

I'm glad to see that Sigma-Designs and the XVID team
work that issue out. Sigma-Designs I guess, was forced to release the code under GPL.

With out the restrictions of the GPL, that code would have gone proprietary. The GPL has protected the original authors rights. Which is what it's intented to do.
