This is the first time I have ever written in some sort of diary. I am kind of clueless on where to start. Well, I will start with a little something about my self. I am a GNU hacker, I work mainly on The GNU Hurd*. I try to donate as much of my time as possible. I am still in collage. I attend Illinois Central Collage(ICC); my major is of course Computer Science. I know a few programming languages C, C++ ( I am currently working a lot with this.), perl, elisp, and php. I am also familiar with scripting i.e. bash, csh etc.. I live in Pekin Illinois it is a very small town, but it is getting bigger. During the summer I spend a lot of my time in the woods mountain biking, which is very enjoyable especially when I want to get away from everything.

* GNU Hurd's project page is here: The GNU Hurd On Savannah

New GFDL Book!
By johnnyb, Section Diaries
Posted on Sat May 8th, 2004 at 03:17:57 GMT
Hello friends! It's been a long time since I posted, but I thought I'd point out my new GFDL book is on Amazon.com. The book is available on preorder at Amazon.com or available immediately from amazon.co.uk and also available immediately at booksamillion.com.

The book is called Programming from the Ground Up and is an introduction to programming using Linux assembly language (and, since I'm talking strictly about the kernel here, it really is Linux and not GNU/Linux). It's licensed under the GFDL. Anyway, it's been a long road, but I've finally made it!

If anyone wants to talk about the book, please feel free to email me at Also, if you'd like my company to publish your GFDL or Creative Commons book, feel free to email me as well.

GNOME: Java the way forward?

GNOME - the GNU desktop project - is about to release version 2.6, the latest and greatest release of a project that has been really moving over the past few years. A single-minded focus on key project goals, alongside corporate involvement, has fuelled development to new peaks. But, is the project heading toward a key point? A point where big decisions have to be made to keep up the pace of development, or even speed up? In short, what if the project started to be replaced by parts written in a higher level language, such as Java?

Breaking the domain name monopoly

Have you ever used a domain name? Of course you have. Many of you even posess a domain name. This usually means that they are paying an annual fee to a company or organization responsible for the management of the top level domain they use. However, why do you need to pay an annual fee to uphold your registration? And why do you have to pay at all for such a virtual entity as a domain name? Read on to find out, and what can be done about it.
